AREZZO is being used in a wide range of clinical applications:

Treatment of heart failure

InferMed and the British Medical Journal Knowledge Group (BMJKG) are collaborating on using Arezzo to produce an interactive version of their leading journal in evidence-based medicine, Clinical Evidence. The prototype system covering treatment of heart failure in the USA and Europe has been demonstrated to more than 60 general practitioners and nurse practitioners, generating extremely positive feedback. The expansion to cover other areas of medicine is underway.

Early referrals application

ERA is a web-enabled electronic referrals system. It combines the Arezzo decision support engine with formal Department of Health Cancer Referral Guidelines to provide GPs with support in making speedy and consistent electronic referrals. A demonstration of ERA can be found here.

Decision support for HIV

InferMed developed the RetroGram application for Hoffman-La Roche to provide HIV specialists with assistance in determining drug resistance based on genotype analysis of the HIV virus (Virology Networks is the developer and co-owner of the application's medical content). HIV treatment centres in 26 different countries used the application globally. Use of RetroGram in a multi-centre European study, combined with expert advice, lead to the reduction in viral load of HIV-infected patients taking part in the study.

Genetic risk assessment

The RAGS application, developed by the Advanced Computation Laboratory at Cancer Research UK, assesses genetic risk in breast and ovarian cancer, and supports professional counsellors helping people make personal healthcare decisions in these areas. RAGS was featured in the BMJ  and on the BBC.

Current projects

InferMed is currently developing Arezzo-based decision support systems to:
  • assist nurses in the choice of drugs to control arthritis and cancer pain in nursing home residents,
  • provide diabetes, hypertension, chest pain, COPD, hyperlipidaemia, and other clinical guidelines to GPs in several regions in Europe
  • assess the risk of rupture in asymptomatic cerebral aneurysms and then recommend appropriate treatments.
  • advise on the use of erythropoetin-stimulating agents for treated anaemia in cancer patients.
